Marching Bands Take To The Field In Competition

Rumson - When we think of Friday Night Lights most think of varsity football teams duking it out for supremacy but there's another side to these events that takes place on both the field and in the stands. Marching bands such as the Rumson Fair Haven's Marching Bulldogs cheer on their team from the stands and take to the field to perform for the crowds gathered at the game. In the case of RFH and many other high schools in the two river area, these bands also compete in marching band competitions around New Jersey.

These shows are truly a work of passion and heart. Training for these shows starts in the summer during band camp where students spend many a hot summer day out learning the show they will play in the fall. The show is then fine tuned throughout the fall portion of the school year as the band gains more experience with each performance. When asked where this passion comes from, RFH's band directory, Tinton Falls resident Dr. Sara Marino, said  "Marching band is a place where you get to play great music and perform, show your school spirit, feel pride in your work, and make lasting friendships.”

Students aren't alone in this endeavor but are guided by faculty, support staff, and an army of parent volunteers ready to assist wherever needed. Advisors work with directors to help hone the different sections of a band. Parents assist with bringing equipment out onto the field, run band dinners, and are a huge part of the motivation these students have for music. So why not come out to your local high school’s football game this season. Come for the football and stay for the performance.
